Li started training at the age of eight and was selected into the national team in 1980. In 1982, he won six of the seven medals awarded at the Sixth World Cup Gymnastic Competition, earning him the title "Prince of Gymnastics".
Li retired from sporting competition in 1988, and in 1990 he founded Li-Ning Company Limited, which sells footwear and sporting apparel in China. Li remains chairman of the company's board of directors. According to Huarun Report’s China Rich List 2014, he has an estimated fortune of RMB 5 billion, making him the 407th wealthiest person in China.

Celebrity effect. Li Ning is one of our national brands. In the opening ceremony of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Li Ning lighted up the main torch in Beijing Bird's Nest Stadium as the final torch bearer. This completely raised Chinese audience’s patriotism. Li Ning himself is the greatest example to raise its brand awareness to the public. And this is one of the historical moments in Chinese sports history.
Li Ning Company Limit has aggressively used sponsorship deals, particularly with athletes and sports teams, both in China and abroad, to raise its profile: Powell, CJ McCollum, and my all-time favorite basketball player Dwyane Wade.
Premium Technology. Nike has air max, Adidas has boost. Li Ning didn’t copy other sports brands’ technologies, and they created a series of new technologies on its products. Take this pair of Way of Wade 6 as an example, it has Cushion Unit, Cloud Form and Drive Form underneath the sneaker, to provide a premium comfort for the athletes to perform on court. In 2018, Li Ning introduces a brand new technology BENG, and pushes its sneaker performance to a whole new level.
In 2017 and 2018, Li Ning participated New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week. As a sports brand, Li Ning starts to created more sports fashion products, mixing some Chinese traditional elements with advanced fashion concepts. Some people called Li Ning “Chinese supreme”, and Li Ning created lots of fancy, unique styles products.
Some people might ask: as a sports brand, why don’t Li Ning just focus on what they are good at, like what they used to be. Why are they transforming from a sports brand to a fashion brand. I don’t know, but as a die-hard Li Ning fan, I personally really like what they are trying to change themselves and find new directions. I know they are taking a risk, but we will see in the future.

Since 2012, Li Ning has hold Li Ning 10 Kilometers running tournaments in eight cities in China including Xian and Shanghai for over six years. This is the first running tournament in China, and have attracted over hundred thousands of people all over the world. It offers a platform for ordinary people to compete with professional athletes. Similar to Questival, people needs to apply Li Ning 10 K online, and received a small backpack, with some Li Ning souvenirs like a T shirt or a head band. Besides, Li Ning has many summer sports camp for teenagers and this brand have donated millions of Chinese dollars of sports equipments to elementary schools in rural areas in China.
